Unique Lady could be the quintessential “American Tale”. Immigrant parents come to Detroit. Mom, who does not speak a word of English, opens a business based on her ability to satisfy customers. The business flourishes. Daughters continue as the next generation of female business owners.That is the nutshell for Unique Lady. Viromia Matti started the business because she had a talent for handcrafting incredible formal wear and she wanted to pass something on to her children. Donna and Ranee were still in their teens when their mother opened Unique Lady in Oak Park. They did everything, from acting as translators to hand beading dresses for hours on end. Eventually, they took over the business as it transformed from a custom dress shop into a traditional boutique.
Today, the business is flourishing based on the principles Viromia instilled in her daughters. “Our success comes from loving the business,” said Donna. “We’ve put our heart and soul into Unique Lady and I think people appreciate that. We went from one tiny room to helping thousands of customers every year to find their dream dress,” added Ranee.
The company also sells dresses online and ships them around the world. “We’ve moved away from just selling at our boutique to selling literally worldwide. If you would have told me five years ago that women all over the country would be buying dresses from us online, I would have thought that you were crazy. But we are. People love and appreciate that they can order dresses that are unavailable to them locally. They can’t get the designer or simply don’t have a high-end dress shop in their community,” explained Ranee. “The bulk of our orders are still in the U.S., but Canada is big for us given that we are a few miles from the border,” says Donna. “But when you get an order from Australia? Really? It blows your mind.”
Today, the business carries all types of formal wear available from dozens of top designers, from prom to bridal and bridesmaids. They have even added tuxedo rentals into the mix because they had so many requests during the prom season.
Unique Lady has recently partnered with some of the top prom dress designers to offer styles that are exclusive in the state of Michigan. “We are incredibly excited to offer these dresses to our customers. These are undoubtedly the hottest dresses for the prom season,” continued Donna.
